Margaret Thatcher received the 1996 Nation’s Honor Award from Senator Paul Coverdell’s Good Government Committee. Mrs. Thatcher “will be seen with Winston Churchill as the greatest British prime minister of the past 50 years,” the senator said in a statement Wednesday. “Lady Thatcher and her good friend and ally, President Reagan, each stood as a colossus at the world stage in the 1980s. Together, they were catalytic in the process of Soviet decline and collapse,” the Georgia Republican said. Previous recipients were former President Bush and House Speaker Newt Gingrich. The award Thatcher honors an individual “who most protected, nurtured and fostered liberty, law and character for our nations and people.”
