LIVERMORE FALLS — Regional School Unit 73 will eliminate late-arrival Wednesdays starting next week to make up for snow days, if the state approves.

The plan, which extends to June 5, was approved by the school board Thursday.

Classes have been canceled six times this school year because of weather, but only one day has to be made up, acting Superintendent Scott Albert told directors.

He said 15 hours could be made up by eliminating late-arrival Wednesdays. Staff would meet after school for their professional development, which is usually held Wednesday mornings.

The education association, which represents teachers, agreed with the plan, according to members at Thursday’s meeting.

“This is the least disruptive for parents, Albert said. “We’re not overwhelming students with long days. We will know by April vacation if more days need to be made up.”

Board member Robert Staples said that last year the board was told eliminating late arrivals wasn’t an option to make up days. He said he wanted to see approval of the plan in writing.

Albert said late-arrival days are considered a regular day for the district, which includes Jay, Livermore and Livermore Falls.

“The key thing is to make sure families and everyone are notified,” board member Joel Pike said.

Albert said Monday that a letter would be sent home with students.
