MINOT — The 2018 Town Report is dedicated to longtime resident Normand “Blackie” R. Labbe Sr., owner and operator of Blackie’s Farm Fresh Produce stores in Auburn and Lewiston.
The selection was announced at Tuesday night’s selectmen meeting.
Labbe, who passed away Feb. 20, 2018, at the age of 87, had resided in Minot since 1952. The produce markets on Minot Avenue in Auburn and Sabattus Street in Lewiston he operated for over 30 years are run by his family.
The dedication in the report says Labbe “has helped so many people and touched so many lives while he was here with us. The Minot Selectmen and town staff would like to thank Blackie for being such an important member of our community and he will be missed by many people in Minot and the surrounding communities.”
The dedication includes the following quotes attributed to Labbe:
• “I never worked a day in my life because if you’re doing what you like, it’s not work.”
• “The cheapest thing in the world is a smile.”
• “Take a profit but don’t rob people.”
According to town Administrator Danielle Loring, copies of the Town Report will be available at the Town Office by Feb. 18, but no later than Feb. 22. They will include illustrations by students in grades two through six at Minot Consolidated School. The theme for the artwork is “What Minot means to me.”
Incumbents Laura Hemond and Steve Holbrook are seeking re-election to the Regional School Unit 16 board of directors, and incumbents Stephen French and Daniel Gilpatric are unopposed for selectmen.
Voters will cast ballots from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 1, at the Town Office.
The town meeting begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 2, at the school.
