I am responding to the Sun Journal front page story “Safety net for the poor not feeling so safe” (Jan. 22). The story continues on Page 2, reporting people’s worries about money for food and housing because of the government shutdown.

Right beside that report of the desperation of so many is a report of U.S. senators who used the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday to tool around the country campaigning for a presidential election that is two years away. Their actions are insensitive, unseemly and downright disgusting.

I hope that, two years from now, voters will all remember that Sens. Cory Booker, Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris and Kirsten Gillibrand were not in Washington, D.C., at the time of the government shutdown (now a national emergency), but were pursuing their own selfish interests.

This country has a dangerous and incompetent fool in the White House and no leaders in the Senate. It is heartbreaking. There are no leaders in the House of Representatives, either.

I have no use for any of them.

Joe Sirois, Rumford
