Neighborhood Watch Group to meet

AUBURN — The Neighborhood Watch Group will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, at Sixth Street Congregational Church.

Free coffee and munchies will be available. The meeting is open to the public and is sponsored by the Police Department.

Association to hold meeting, dinner

AUBURN — The United New Auburn Association will hold a meeting and dinner at 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29.

The speaker will be City Manager Peter Crichton.

Children’s yoga class to start

FREEPORT — Yoga with Elizabeth will start Feb. 5 from 10:30 to 11 a.m. at the Freeport Community Library. It will continue the first Tuesday of the month.

The program is designed for toddler and preschool-aged children. Adult supervision is required. It is free and open to the public.

Qi Gong classes at Bethel church

BETHEL — Qi Gong, an ancient Chinese healing art designed to enhance one’s capacity to work effectively with life-force energy, will be held from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays, Feb. 5 to March 12, at the Methodist Church Annex, 75 Main St. 

The class is facilitated by Jen Deraspe, founder of Nurture Through Nature retreat center, who has been leading retreats and teaching yoga, Qi Gong and meditation since 1999. Class time will be shared through activating the Qi, releasing and purifying blocked energy, tonifying internal power, and gentle stretching and slow, flowing movements.

Dress in comfortable, loose fitting clothing. All levels welcome. People may attend one class or the whole series. Walk-ins are welcome.

Norway Legion to meet

NORWAY — Meetings at the Stone-Smart American Legion Post, 212 Main St., will be held at 7 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month.

Coffee hour will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesdays with desserts. All are welcome.

Eagles to host Texas hold ’em

RUMFORD — The Fraternal Order of Eagles host Texas hold ’em poker tournaments on the second Thursday of each month.

Doors will open at 4 p.m. Games will start at 6 p.m. There will be a $50 buy-in with a $5 high hand, as well as a 50/50 raffle. The kitchen will be open from 4 to 6 p.m.

Cafe to show food documentary

LEWISTON — There will be a Movie Night documentary, “Eating You Alive,” showing at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, at The Ark & Olive Branch Cafe, 791 Lisbon St.

This documentary aims at revealing the truth behind why Americans are so sick and what they can do about it. This documentary does not necessarily represent the views of the Ark & Olive Branch.

Marine Corps League to meet

LEWISTON — The Marine Corps League Central Maine Detachment 810 will host its monthly meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, at the Lewiston Armory, 65 Central Ave.

All Marines, FMF Corpsman and Navy chaplains are invited. Anyone interested in Marines Helping Veterans is also invited to attend. 

The league is offering the incentive to pay for a first-year membership for interested folks who aren’t entirely sure they want to join. There is no requirement to renew membership.

Library to screen documentary

FREEPORT — The 32nd Camden Conference is focusing on China this year: its complex social, economic, environmental and political affairs, as well as its relations with Asian neighbors, the U.S. and the international community at large. There will be a screening of “The China Hustle” at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, at Freeport Community Library.

“The China Hustle” is a 2018 documentary detailing the disturbing and ongoing multi-billion dollar heist playing out on Wall Street. Ignorance and greed rule the day in this film, wherein small Chinese companies are hyped up and sold by American investment banks to U.S.-based investors. Hundreds of billions of dollars have been lost so far, and in an increasingly deregulated financial world, this problem isn’t going anywhere. Forbes deemed “The China Hustle” as “the most important film of 2018.” This film is one hour, 22 minutes long, and is rated R.

8th annual Tech Challenge

NORWAY — Oxford Hills Technical School has announced the eighth annual Oxford Hills Tech Challenge starting at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, at the high school campus.

Tech Challenge is a showcase event in which students from 20 career and technical programs participate in skill-specific competitions and demonstrations for parents, community members and others. The activities will include movie making, MIG welding, automotive troubleshooting and children’s storybook writing.

The competitions are ongoing and concurrent so members of the public are invited to visit as many different programs for as long as they are able. An awards/medal ceremony will be held at 7 p.m.
