KINGFIELD — Selectmen are asking voters to attend an informational meeting Thursday night to comment on banning plastic bags, creating a riverfront park and paving Tufts Pond Road.
The meeting is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at Webster Hall.
The “Ban the Bag” discussion started in July 2018 when several Kingfield Elementary School students asked selectmen to consider an ordinance banning the use of plastic bags at stores. Selectmen agreed the public should weigh in on the issue.
The effort to create a riverfront park and trailhead began in 2012 after the formation of the Village Enhancement Committee. The development is proposed for an area behind Longfellow’s Restaurant and several private properties near the Carrabassett River. The estimated $179,000 cost will provide a paved, landscaped, handicapped-accessible area with picnic tables and access to the water.
Regarding the Tufts Pond Road reconstruction and paving project, selectmen will ask voters to approve options for paying the estimated $800,000 to $1 million cost. At previous meetings, selectmen debated whether to complete the project in one year or spread it over two to four years. Topsham-based Wright-Pierce Engineering reviewed the most recent plans in 2018.
