LEWISTON — The Lewiston Auburn Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the city of Lewiston Department of Economic Development and the Cooperative Development Institute, is offering a workshop series on leaving a business.
Planning for Tomorrow is a three-part series on options and strategies for business owners to Exit Their Business and Retire.
Workshops will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. beginning on Jan. 22 and continuing on Feb. 12 and 26, at the chamber, 415 Lisbon St. The workshops are free but registration is required.
According to the chamber, too many business owners don’t have a realistic plan for how to exit their business, earn a decent retirement income and preserve the legacy they have built and the jobs they have created. They don’t understand their options and don’t have time to figure it out on their own. Because of this, they wait until they are ready to retire before they think about how to exit their business, and liquidation and closure becomes the default option.
No matter how big or small a business, the workshops will help attendees understand what they need to know and plan for, and help with understanding all options while deciding which ones make the most sense.
Workshop topics by date are:
Tuesday, Jan. 22, Workshop 1 — Know what you want: Defining your goals and exit planning. Presented by Austin Albert, financial adviser, LPL Financial, Twin City Financial; David Jean, CPA, CCIFP, CExP, principal, Altus Exit Strategies; and Rob Brown, director, Business Ownership Solutions, Cooperative Development Institute.
Tuesday, Feb. 12, Workshop 2 — Know your options: Open market sale, family transitions and selling to employees. Presented by David Jean, CPA, CCIFP, CExP, principal, Altus Exit Strategies.
