DEAR SUN SPOTS: There are a lot of great restaurants in Lewiston. That was the sentiment of Lewiston Youth Advisory Council (LYAC) members at their recent meeting. Continuing their Shine on Lewiston campaign, they want to highlight the city as a destination for good food.

Shine on Lewiston: Let’s Go Eat! will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, at The Franco Center, 46 Cedar St. Various Lewiston restaurants will be on site with free samples (not full dinners) as well as information about their start here and doing business in Lewiston. Food will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Cultural food will also be marked by a related country flag at the respective sample table. This includes multiple cultures: Italian, Mexican, Japanese, African, Thai, Chinese and Greek. The event, which is free and open to the public, is an effort to build awareness for the city’s restaurant scene.

Lewiston restaurant owners are asked to contact LYAC if they would like to participate in this event. Due to space allotment, LYAC will select 20 restaurants that represent the various cuisines in Lewiston.

It’s a great way for restaurants to get free publicity and to demonstrate that thriving here is possible. There is no entry fee for restaurants to participate.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Can you give me information about country singers, husband and wife duo Joey and Rory Feek? When did Joey pass away?

ANSWER: This is sad … Joey died March 4, 2016, at the age of 40 from cancer. If you would like to know more about the devoted couple who were married for 14 years, Rory wrote a memoir titled, “This Life I Live,” which was published in 2017. His newest book is “Once Upon a Farm: Lessons on Growing Love, Life, and Hope on a New Frontier.” This book is a reflection of Rory’s life since his wife has passed away. Rory continues on alone, raising the couple’s young daughter who has Down syndrome. There are also two grown daughters from Rory’s previous marriage.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Is there a business in the Lewiston-Auburn or Oxford Hills-Western Maine area that repairs VCRs ?

ANSWER: I’m afraid you might not find the answer you’re looking for, but I’m going to put it out to our clever and every-resourceful readers in Sun Spots Land. Does anyone know someone who provides this service? Deny’s Service Center in Lewiston might be able to help you. Call 207-783-6869.

I’m a big fan of the website, itstillworks.com. YouTube also has great how-to videos on repairing everything, including a VCR. If I can figure it out, you can, too!

Another idea I can offer you is that there are places that will convert your old well-loved videos into a newer, more advanced format such as DVD or even save them to a thumb drive or your computer for a reasonable cost. There are converters you can purchase to do this yourself at home, mail order businesses that specialize in helping you, or you can call the experts at Photo Finish at the Auburn Mall at 207-783-3354. They are great!
