CANTON — Selectmen are looking for a solution to the problem of access to cemeteries on Meadowview Road.

The town locks the gate to the road during the spring and summer because of vandalism and trash dumping.

But when they went to unlock the gate for Veterans Day weekend to allow access to the cemeteries, they found that someone had replaced the town’s lock with their own and they had to cut the lock to open the gate.

“We need to come up with a better idea for (a lock) for this spring,” Selectman Russell Adams said Thursday. Administrative Assistant Tina Cagle said some locks on storage units are sturdier. “They’re round and you can’t cut it.”

The road is open for snowmobilers throughout the winter but will be locked once more this spring with an unbreakable lock.

In other business, Cagle told selectmen that Fire Chief Jason Vaughan had notified her that “something needs to be done” about the plumbing problem between the Town Office building and the attached fire station.

Adams said the problem has been an ongoing issue. “We’re not sure if it freezes or it plugs up.” The board decided that the septic tank will need to be pumped out next week in order to find out what is causing the problem.
