A special election will be held this winter to fill the seat for Maine House District 124.

The election was made necessary by last week’s appointment of Bangor attorney Aaron Frey as Maine’s attorney general. In November Frey won his fourth term for House District 124, which includes Bangor and part of Orono, beating Daniel LaPointe of Orono.

The Maine Constitution, however, does not allow Frey to serve as both a legislator and attorney general, making a new election necessary. The parties in the towns represented by District 124 now must get together and select new candidates.

Plans are to schedule the special election late this winter.
