Often times, it’s not the immediate results that come from a scoreboard that catch a coach’s attention.

Leavitt coach Dave Gerrish wants his team to win games this season and expects that it will. But with no seniors at his disposal as the Hornets start the grind of a tough KVAC schedule, he’s more interested in helping his young team move closer to reaching its potential.

“With a young team like this, we’ll just try to get better and better every day and try to understand what we’re not doing well, try to start to do things better and hopefully build towards the tournament,” Gerrish said.

And stay healthy, Gerrish added. The Hornets were hit hard by the injury bug last year, and the effects continue to linger. Sophomore Jayden Carpenter, who tore her ACL last season, is still recovering but should be ready to return early in the season.

In addition to Carpenter, junior Taylor White and sophomores Alison Noniewicz and Kayleigh Gilbert return with considerable varsity experience. Junior McKenna Redstone will be one of the key varsity newcomers seeing an expanded role.
