WORCESTER, Mass. — At Worcester Polytechnic Institute, all undergraduates are required to complete a research-driven, professional-level project that applies science and technology to addresses an important societal need or issue.

Peter Emidy of Winthrop, a member of the class of 2019 majoring in electrical and computer engineering, was a member of a student team that recently completed a hands-on research project in Worcester.

The project was titled Development of a Mobile Website for the Worcester Art Museum. In the team’s project summary, the students wrote, “Through interviewing, brainstorming, and collaboration with museum professionals, we decided the best course of action for this project was to implement a WAM Mobile Website with top features being an exhibit viewer, audio tours and an interactive map.”

Adele Werner of New Gloucester, a member of the class of 2019 majoring in chemical engineering, was a member of a student team that recently completed hands-on research through the WPI project center in Paraguay. The project was titled “Community Clean Water Access.”

In their project summary, the students wrote, “The team produced schematics of the water pipelines systems of both the Junta de Saneamiento and the Escuela Agricola, a maintenance guide for the Junta de Saneamiento, and provided new pump equipment for two Qom communities.”

Matthew Boros of Stow was a member of a student team that recently completed hands-on research through the WPI project center in Panama City, Panama.

A member of the Class of 2020, Boros is majoring in actuarial mathematics.

The project was titled Developing a Robotics Curriculum in Panama with Fundesteam. In their project summary the students wrote, “They have asked us to create workshops using Arduino technology to teach concepts in physics, robotics, computer science, mechanical engineering, and math.”

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Bob Jones University recently named Marissa Yates of Farmington to the 2018 Chorale, a 50-voice choir comprised of undergraduate and graduate students from a variety of degree programs.

Yates is a senior majoring in exercise science.

BRUNSWICK — Bowdoin College held its annual Sarah and James Bowdoin Day ceremony Oct. 19 to honor undergraduates who distinguish themselves with excellence in scholarship.

Honorees are in the top 20 percent of each class for the previous academic year according to highest grade point average. In addition, those who earned a GPA of 4.0 are designated Sarah and James Bowdoin Book Award winners.

Local honorees included Diego Villamarin of Auburn, a member of the Bowdoin College Class of 2020 who is earning a major in biology, and Olivia Giles of Gray, a Book Award winner, who is a member of the Bowdoin College Class of 2020 and is earning a major in government and legal studies.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Cameron Cox of Bowdoinham was welcomed into Western New England University’s chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society on Oct. 19 in Rivers Memorial Hall.

Founded in 1924, Alpha Lambda Delta is a national honor society for first year students that encourages and recognizes superior academic achievement. Alpha Lambda Delta seeks to promote intelligent living, a continued high standard of learning, and encourages students to recognize and develop meaningful goals for their roles in society. Members pledge to use their education to benefit the community, the college, the nation, and the world. Acceptance is based on attaining a minimum grade point average of 3.50 in their first semester of study or a 3.50 cumulative average at the end of the first year.

Cox is working toward a BSE in civil engineering.

CANTON, N.Y. — Caleb Clarke of Bethel is participating in a St. Lawrence University off-campus study abroad program during the fall 2018 semester.

Clarke is a member of the Class of 2020 and is majoring in physics and mathematics. Clarke attended Gould Academy. Clarke is participating in St. Lawrence University’s fall off-campus program in New Zealand at University of Otago.

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — Joshua Bradley of Turner, was appointed to the President’s Student Advisory Council for the current academic year. The group includes of sophomores, juniors, and seniors who represent a wide variety of academic majors and co-curricular interests.

Bradley is a political science and international studies major.
