LEWISTON — The Art Lekousi Maine State Table Tennis Championshipwas held recently on November 17 at the Lewiston Armory. The tournament is named after Art Lekousi, a 91 year old, former French teacher from Portland, who was instrumental in promoting the sport of table tennis here in the state for several decades. Art was a state champion for many years, beginning in the 1950’s thru the 1980’s. At this year’s tournament, Art was present and was honored for his devotion and for his efforts in promoting the sport of table tennis. In fact he even gave a demonstration and showed that he still had ability and skill, regardless of his age.
In the A category, Ronan LeFanic defeated Sonu Bhatia. In the B Category, Hugo Robinson defeated Bill Preis. In the C category, Youssouf Hassan defeated Venkata Kancharla. In the Over 40 division, Sonu Bhatia defeated Farah Hassan. Harry Steinberg with Ronal LeFanic won the double tournament by defeating Mohammed “Shuman” Ahmed and Irena Stepan.
