PARIS — The Board of Selectmen voted unanimously Monday evening to recommit all real estate and personal property taxes to Town Clerk Liz Knox.

The vote came after the board voted to settle all real estate and personal property taxes from former Town Manager Vic Hodgkins.

Selectmen voted 4-1 on Nov. 15 to terminate Hodgkins’ contract, which was due to expire in September 2021.

The board has remained silent about the reason behind Hodgkins’ termination.

Knox, who was appointed interim tax collector in Hodgkins’ place at the Nov. 15 meeting, told the board Monday that because Hodgkins was the tax collector and “the one responsible for all tax collections and liens,” they needed to recommit the taxes to whomever took his place.

“By law, you need a tax collector, somebody who collects taxes and excise taxes,” Knox said. “If you don’t have (a tax collector), we’re not allowed to collect those things.”

Selectman Gary Vaughn asked Knox whether there was a statute or law that a person had to be a tax collector.

“No, but you should have training and understand it,” Knox said, adding that there is a “tax collector lien class that should be taken, and I’ve taken it multiple times.”
