AUBURN — The public library has announced its teen events for December.

Maine Job Corps — For teens and new adults (ages 16-24). This program helps provide teens who are interested in learning skills to lead to success in the job market. The program is free. Contact Cathie Gavett of the Maine Job Corps at 207-458-5369 to find out more about this program and who is eligible. She will then arrange a mutually convenient time to meet with you at the Auburn Public Library.

SAPARS Teen Space Drop In — 3 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, Teen Space. Teens are invited to join Heather, an advocate from Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Services. Each month, she will meet with teens to discuss the issues important to them, including consent, bullying, sexual assault and harassment, bystander intervention and internet safety. Visits may include question and answer, educational videos or activities. All teens are welcome to drop in.

Homework Help for Teens — 1 to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, Teen Space. Half-day Wednesdays allow for time for students to gather and do group work, find help getting organized or need assistance with homework. The tutor is a professor at Bates College whose background is science but who has taught other subjects, as well. Note that during this program, preference will be given to those using the Teen Space for school-related work.

DIY Teen Space Takeover: Holiday Ornaments — 3 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, Teen Space. Each month, the program will feature a different DIY project. This month, folks can create holiday ornaments while decorating the Teen Space for the season. This program will include snacks.

Safe Voices — 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, Teen Space. Meet with Jennifer from Safe Voices. Each month, she will visit the Teen Space to chat about relationships and work on projects. Teens are encouraged to think of topics they would like to discuss.

Great Stories Club – Empathy: The Cost of Switching Sides — 4:30 to 6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 10, Teen Space. During this meeting of the Great Stories Club, teens will be discussing the book “Kindred: A Graphic Novel Adaptation” by Octavia Butler, Damian Duffy and John Jennings. Heather of the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Services (SAPARS) will meet with us to talk about some of the more difficult parts of the book. Teens interested in reading this book and participating in the discussion should sign up with Donna at APL. Copies of the book will be available on Monday, Nov. 26.

Tech Tuesdays in the Media Lab — 3 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11, CREATE! Media Lab. This new program will be held on selected Tuesdays to learn what folks can do in the CREATE! Media Lab. This series kicks off learning about Photos, Apple’s photography app to help keep photos organized. For this workshop, bring your photos in any format — on a camera, a memory card, flash drive, CD, DVD or the photo itself (they can be digitized). Those bringing a camera, should also bring their own USB cord. Learn how to import photos to organize and create albums, as well as how to digitize photos to put them onto a CD as a Christmas gift. This workshop will demonstrate all these techniques. This program is for teens and adults and, due to the size of the room, space is limited. Tweens in the Teen Space — Noon to 2 p.m. Wednesdays, Dec. 12 and 19, Teen Space. On half-day Wednesdays, sixth-graders are invited to come to the Teen Space on the second floor. It will provide students with time get a head start on homework, and there will be crafts or board games available (just ask), or stop by to hang out.

Teen Library Advisory Board — 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, Teen Space. The Teen Library Advisory Board (LAB) is a joint venture between the Auburn Public Library and the library at Edward Little High School. Its mission is to create more awareness of and collaboration between both libraries, promoting everything the libraries offer to the teens in the community. The LAB meets bi-weekly, alternating meetings between the Auburn Public Library and Edward Little. Teens interested in joining us should be interested in community involvement and be a lover of the library. (Note: students do not have to be enrolled at EL to participate in the LAB.) Gaming Hour — 4 to 5 p.m. Wednesdays, Dec. 12 and 26, Androscoggin Community Room. Take a break from studying and stop by the Androscoggin Room on the lower level for video games and snacks. There will be an XBox and Wii and a small collection of games. Teens are welcome to bring their favorites, but only those rated T and E. 

Teen Snack Chat — 3 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, Teen Space or Community Room. Once a month, join  a conversation about topics which impact or are of interest to teens. There will be healthy snacks prepared. Folks should meet in either the Teen Space or the Community Room, depending on the kitchen needs, so those interested in attending should check the board on the first floor upon entering the building to confirm the location.

Teens! Matinee Movie: “Just Friends” (PG-13) — 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, Androscoggin Community Room. Come in from the cold and watch an afternoon movie. This month’s feature, “Just Friends,” a comedy, stars Ryan Reynolds (Chris) and Amy Smart (Jamie). After Chris confesses his love to best friend Jamie in high school, he’s told she wants to be “just friends.” Fast forward 10 years — Chris returns home, having become a successful (and attractive) record producer. While home, he discovers he still wants to be more than “just friends” and sets out to win Jamie’s heart. This program is for teens ages 13-18 (due to the PG-13 rating), and will include snacks.
