LEWISTON — Museum L-A will celebrate #GivingTuesday on Nov. 27 by raising money to create a School Field Trip Scholarship Program for 2019.
#GivingTuesday is a global effort to harness the collective power of individuals, communities and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity. It follows the widely recognized Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping.
National studies show that field trips provide valuable reinforcement to classroom learning, getting students out to explore and encounter things in an authentic setting where they can have a more immersive learning experience.
“Trips stand out in a child’s memory while offering a fun way to learn outside the classroom,” said Kate Webber, director of Education & Outreach at Museum L-A. “If museums are only available to school districts with larger budgets and students whose parents bring them in their free time, the very students who stand to benefit the most from a cultural experience will miss out.”
Donations will pay for students from local schools to visit Museum L-A. To receive the scholarship, interested schools will complete a short application. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and the scholarship funds will be distributed until they are gone.
The museum’s goal is to raise $2,000 which would pay for up to 500 students to visit Museum L-A throughout 2019.
