DEAR SUN SPOTS: New Vineyard Public Library is holding its Annual Holiday Crafts and Bake Sale on Saturday, Nov. 17 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Smith Hall, Route 27 in New Vineyard.

We will have a great selection of local holiday crafts including wreaths, quilts, jewelry, paintings and, of course, pies, breads and cookies.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Once again the Rambunctious Red Hatters and their supporting sisters are having their annual toy drive on Nov. 16 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. We will be at the Auburn Mall to support the Salvation Army. DEAR SUN SPOTS: The YWCA Central Maine’s Christmas Bazaar will be held on Sunday, Dec. 2 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 130 East Ave. in Lewiston.

We will be offering breakfast and Santa will make an appearance. We need donations such as Christmas decorations, jewelry, housewares, etc. Please drop your donations off at the YWCA front desk.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Whether you are a knitting or crocheting pro, a novice, or maybe you’ve never picked up knitting or crocheting needles in your life, but think it could be fun, there is a great opportunity right now for you to craft for a cause.

For the past six years, volunteers have stepped up to make scarves and hats for athletes participating in Maine’s Winter Special Olympics.

This nationwide project provides handmade items for every special Olympics program in the country. Over the years, volunteers have kept the project going, choosing new colors each year. For the upcoming 2019 winter games to be held Jan. 27-29, the colors are purple, blue and green.

The athletes love receiving their hats and scarves because the items make them feel supported and that someone cares about how they do in the competitions. And the people knitting and crocheting the hats and scarves are excited about participating in the event through crafting.

If you are interested in making hats and scarves for Special Olympics Maine, simply use any shade of purple, blue and green yarn. Use any design you wish, creativity is encouraged.

Volunteers are also encouraged to send a letter along with the garment. If you’d like to give the athlete the opportunity to write a thank you note, include a return address. The athletes are teenagers and adults, so the organization is looking for bigger sizes.
