I hope voters pass the universal home care initiative on the ballot in November. It would have made a tremendous difference in the life of my family some years ago. For several years, my wife was ill at the end of her life. I was her primary caregiver, taking care of her daily needs.

At that same time, my aunt became disabled and because we could not offer her to come live with us, she had to go into a nursing home. We were disappointed not to be able to take care of her, because she had helped us a great deal while she was healthy.

Home care services would have made all the difference for both my wife and my aunt.

I believe Maine can provide those services if voters pass the universal home care initiative on the ballot this November. The initiative would help all Maine families have better choices and better quality of life for elders.

People should not be misled by the No on 1 campaign. I know that Question 1 would be a good thing for so many families like mine.

I hope others will join me in voting “yes” on Question 1 in November.
