SANDY RIVER PLANTATION — A Rhode Island man received minor burns to his hands Tuesday when he tried to put out a fire at his camp at 40 South Shore Drive, Rangeley Fire Rescue Chief Michael Bacon said Thursday.
The fire started in the first-floor bathroom where David O’Brian was fixing a leak. Flames spread to the second floor of the 30- by 20-foot wood-frame building, Bacon said.
“It was an accidental fire,” Bacon said, but he did not release a cause until hearing from an independent investigator from O’Brien’s insurer.
The camp will need some work before it is livable, Bacon said.
About 20 firefighters from Rangeley, Eustis and Phillips responded to the 1:54 p.m. call, along with NorthStar EMS ambulance crews. Smoke was coming from the eaves and flames were showing from a broken window.
The chief consulted with Sgt. Joel Davis of the Office of the Maine State Fire Marshal as par of the investigation.
