National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at locations around Maine.

Sponsored by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, the day aims to provide a safe, convenient and responsible way of disposing of prescription drugs, while educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications.

Police and sheriff’s departments in most Maine towns are participating. Contact your local police department for more information or go to tinyurl.com/drugtakeback4 to search for the nearest collection location.

Over the course of the program, nearly 475 tons of prescription drugs have been safely collected across the country, including more than 14 tons of unwanted medications in Maine alone.

Federal regulations also allow pharmacies, hospitals, clinics and other authorized collectors to serve as collection points for unused prescription medication, and the Department of Veterans Affairs participates in prescription drug take-back programs at VA facilities.
