AUBURN — A water main break drenched a section of Center Street on Wednesday. Traffic was detoured as crews from the Auburn Water District dug down to fix the broken main.

According to Sid Hazelton, superintendent of the Auburn Water District and the Auburn Sewerage District, reports came in around 4:30 a.m. of a water break on Center Street, in front of Auburndale Shopping Center, the plaza housing Shaw’s Supermarket and AAA Northern New England. Kmart, Arby’s and Applebee’s were also affected by the break.

Work continued into the afternoon.

“When we dug, we discovered there were actually three breaks on the piece of pipe,” Hazelton said.

Crews had the main fixed around 2 p.m. and restored water to the businesses.
