What’s cooking in The Buzz this week? Pizza and apartments.
First, let’s serve up a $4.5 million project.
The Auburn Planning Board this week approved 48 apartment units bound for 1048 Turner St., on the empty, 2.92-acre lot at the corner of Turner Street and Gracelawn Road.
The project by Millbran LLC is planned as a subdivision with four buildings, 12 apartments each, according to a letter to the board filed by Mike Grotto of Stoneybrook Consultants.
The buildings would be three stories with two one-bedroom units and two two-bedroom units on each floor, according to Grotto.
Gracelawn Park Apartments offer market-rate units, each with a private deck.
Millbran seeks to start construction as soon as possible, Grotto wrote, and expects to have the units filled by the end of 2019.
City Planner Audrey Knight said work cannot start until additional site plans are approved with a few conditions, but she expected approval would come soon.
Order up
The shuttered Sunoco gas station at 1104 Lisbon St., across from J&S Oil, is becoming a Domino’s Pizza.
Owner H F Lewiston Realty pulled a permit application for the $107,000 renovation last month. No additional information was available Thursday about the timeline for opening.
Batter up?
Tom Anthoine, co-chairman of the Auburn Lewiston Sports Hall of Fame, told attendees at the Lewiston Auburn Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce breakfast Thursday morning that the group would love a few more volunteers.
Anthoine joked he was at the Hilton Garden Inn kicking off a “visibility campaign.” Since 1984, the group has inducted 155 athletes, coaches and others in fields as varied as cycling, karate, gymnastics and hockey.
“We’re very passionate about what we have here,” he said. “You’d be surprised at some of these kids.
“We’ve got some kids who were national champions in their college career. They’re outstanding candidates both on and off the field, and role models that have performed at the highest level.”
Chamber President Beckie Conrad said the talk tied in to the chamber’s “Make It Here” campaign. The sports hall of fame, a chamber initiative, showed off one of the area’s strengths.
“There’s a space here to have a conversation about our community’s visibility and ways to attract young folks to live here,” Conrad said, “and I think the hall of fame is a place to start having that conversation.”
