Waterford taxpayer John Martin became the first user of the new credit card system at the town office on September. 26. The retired Navy Master Chief paid his property taxes to Town Clerk Brenda Bigonski, right, and Deputy Clerk Betty Becker in the clerk’s office. On August 13, the Board of Selectmen agreed to have Becker research having a credit card system that would be available to taxpayers this year. A 1 percent discount was available for those who chose to pay by credit card within 30 days of the September 1 comittment of the taxes. Municipalities can pass the fees back to the user and many communities have set fees for credit card use. Waterford has selected to set a fee of $1 for up to $40 and 2.5 percent of the total bill above that amount. Early payers received the one percent discount.
