You Asked
By Michalene Hague
Give me silence –
moments of snow, wind-rippled
like drifting desert sand,
hollows carved like couches
for contemplation.
Give me quiet –
minutes of fresh-cut grass, its fragrance
filling the space of spring,
before, like birthdays, fading
into Time.
Give me that hush –
bits before bird-song floats
like leaves in summer woods,
spirits lifting in the fluting light
of reflection.
Give me pause –
seconds of voices muted
by the startle of autumn’s feast,
spread like plates of happiness
on family tables.
Gifts? You asked
what I want. These – not for
ever, but for now.
