HARTFORD, Conn. — The Bates College football team found out the hard way that Trinity will once again be a contender in the NESCAC in 2018.

The Bantams defeated the Bobcats 59-16 on Saturday.

Trinity scored a pair of first-quarter touchdowns to grab a 14-0 lead heading into the second.

Bates responded midway through the second with a 12-play, 50-yard drive that ended in a 36-yard field goal by Justin Foley.

A few minutes later, Bates defensive back Anthony Costa intercepted at Jordan Vazzano pass and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown, cutting Trinity’s lead to 14-9 with 4:30 remaining in the first half.

But the Bantams scored twice in the final 97 seconds of the half, both on touchdown passes by Vazzano, who threw four in the first half and five in the game.

Trinity pulled away in the third quarter with 24 unanswered points.

Bates scored with 4:58 left in the game when freshman running back Caleb Bolden ran in from 4 yards out.

The Bantams racked up 563 yards total off. The Bobcats gained only 102 yards. Quarterback Brendan Costa threw for 71 yards (12-of-26) and ran for 23 on 13 carries.

Bates (0-2) plays at Tufts next Saturday.

Women’s soccer

NHTI 3, CMCC 0

Maura Hart scored a hat trick for New Hampshire Technical Institute (4-0) en route to a 3-0 win over Central Maine Community College on Saturday.

Tess Witmer saved four shots in the win, while Ali Sult saved 13 shots for the Mustangs.

Wesleyan 2, Bates 1

LEWISTON — Gianna Argento scored twice as the Cardinals (5-2, 2-1 NESCAC) beat the Bobcats (2-4, 0-4).

Riley Turcotte scored for the Bobcats in the second half.

Bates 1, Wesleyan 0

LEWISTON — Peder Bakken scored from Charlie Cronin in the 22nd minute as the Bobcats (4-2, 2-2 NESCAC) beat the Cardinals (2-4, 1-2) at Russel St. Field on Saturday.

Robbie Montanaro finished with two saves for Bates.

Husson 2, UMF 1

BANGOR — Rafael Paganoni scored the overtime winner in the 96th minute to lift the Eagles (3-5-1, 2-0 NAC) over the Beavers (3-4, 0-2).

Dylan Brice scored on a pass from Rod Ghanayem in the 14th minute to put Husson ahead 1-0. Farmington tied it up on a score by Tristan Price, who knocked in a header off a free kick in the 26th minute.

Matthew Wison recorded 11 saves for Farmington, while Kyle Townsend and Benjamin Powell each stopped one shot for Husson.

NHTI 2, CMCC 0

Iddrisu Abdallah and Ryan Gelinas each scored in the first half and the Lynx (4-0-2, 3-0-1 YSCC) defeated the Mustangs (5-2) in Auburn.

Andre Sturgeon recorded four saves for NHTI, and Dalton Wing stopped five shots for Central Maine.

College field hockey

Bates 5, Wesleyan 2

LEWISTON — Five different players scored to lead the Bobcats (1-4, 1-3 NESAC) over the Cardinals (3-3, 0-2) on Saturday.

Bridget Tweedie, Emma Paterson, Victoria McGee, Taylor Lough and Riley Burns all scored for Bates.

Nikki Gerjarusak scored twice for Wesleyan.

Delaney Wood recorded two saves for Wesleyan, and Ellie Bauer stopped three shots for Bates.

Husson 4, UMF 1

BANGOR — Haley Ward had a hat trick and the Eagles (1-5, 1-0 NAC) defeated the Beavers (1-5, 0-1) in Bangor.

Arika Bochu scored to put Husson ahead with 15:23 remaining in the first half. Farmington responded just over a minute later with a score from Kyla Stertevant to tie it at 1-1 heading into halftime.

Sadie Royer assisted on two of Ward’s second half scores, and Andrea Shaggy recorded five saves for Husson.

Grace DiMarco stopped 12 shots for Farmington.
