LEWISTON — Two people were hurt Friday afternoon when an SUV slammed into a utility pole on Webster Street.

Witnesses said that moments after the pole was struck, two people got out of the SUV and began rolling on the grass in pain. The drivers of two other vehicles pulled onto a lawn near the crash site to assist the victims.

Hibo Abdilahi, 30, of Lewiston, who had been driving the SUV, was loaded onto a stretcher and taken to Central Maine Medical Center. She was examined for complaints of pain and later released.

Her passenger, Hogan Hogae, 31, of Lewiston, was examined at the scene of the crash.

Witnesses said it appeared that Abdilahi had been driving outbound on Webster Street at about 4:50 p.m. when her Saturn drifted off the road and struck the pole just before the intersection at Farwell Street.

Police were investigating the wreck later Friday. It was not immediately clear what caused Abdilahi to drive off the road.
