100 Years Ago: 1918

Members of the Oxford County League of Historical Societies will gather for the organization’s fall meeting at 2 p.m. Saturday at the community room adjacent to the Town Office. The Paris Cape Historical Society will host the meeting and program after a brief business meeting. Local societies are encouraged to bring items for sale from the various sections of the county. The public is invited to attend. Refreshments will be provided by the host society.

50 Years Ago: 1968

The $4.5 million new bridge for Lewiston-Auburn received the endorsement of the Androscoggin County Republican Committee at a Thursday night meeting. A recommendation by John Telow of Lewiston that the county committee go on record in favor of the project received the unanimous approval of the approximately 40 persons gathered in political poster spotted GOP headquarters in Auburn. Legislation for a new bridge which goes before the voters in November as a referendum was sponsored by State Rep. Louis Jalbert, Lewiston Democrat.

25 Years Ago: 1993

Workers are assembling tiny tables in preparation for the big day at 31-33 River St. The first floor of the four-story building is being renovated for the Monday opening of the new Head Start classroom. It will bring to eight the number of classrooms currently serving 253 children in the Lewiston-Auburn area. The classroom will accommodate 18 students and in some ways is unique among the other classrooms in the area. It will include a new kitchen equipped with restaurant fixtures to prepare daily, on-site breakfasts and lunches. The River Street classroom also differs from most other Head Start facilities in that it was “designed with us in mind,” according to Andrew Poulin, a teacher. Often the agency is housed in facilities that were originally intended for other uses but the renovations on this building were undertaken specifically with plans for conversion to a Head Start classroom. The new classrooms are the third joint venture entered into by the Head Start program and the Lewiston Housing Authority. “Head Start has had a great marriage with the Lewiston Housing Authority,” said Head Start’s director, Estelle Rubenstein. When the work on the upper three floors of the building is completed they will provide low-income housing with a great view of the Androscoggin River.
