KINGFIELD — After three run-ins with police in 10 hours, an Athens man was being held at the Franklin County Detention Center on Wednesday on charges of drunken driving, criminal mischief and failure to report an accident.

The series of events involving Anthony Cobb, 33, began shortly after 4 p.m. Tuesday when Franklin County Deputy Brian McCormick responded to a report of a car running over a mailbox on Main Street in Kingfield and doing “doughnuts” in a parking lot off Main Street, according to Sheriff Scott Nichols Sr.

The vehicle and driver were located later in the day, and the driver was identified as Cobb, Nichols said. Cobb was not driving at that time, but he was issued summonses on misdemeanor charges of criminal mischief and failing to report an accident.

At 6:58 p.m. Tuesday, McCormick responded to a disturbance at a residence on High Street in Kingfield and found Cobb and two others intoxicated and being loud, Nichols said. No charges were filed.

At 2:14 a.m. Wednesday, McCormick responded to an accident on Lexington Road and found a vehicle driven by Cobb off the road. Cobb, who was not hurt, told McCormick he swerved to avoid hitting a mailbox, Nichols said.

Cobb was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of operating under the influence and was being held on $250 cash bail Wednesday morning at the Franklin County Detention Center in Farmington.

A conviction on the OUI and criminal mischief charges each carry a penalty of up to 364 days in jail; a conviction on failing to report an accident is punishable by up to six months in jail.
