LEWISTON — Leo E. Albert, 82, of Lewiston lost his life suddenly at his home Friday, Aug. 31.
He was born May 20, 1936, in Lewiston to Emile and Cecile (Chouinard) Albert. He married Rena J. Girardin of Durham on July 6, 1963, and then raised their family in Lisbon Center.
He attended and graduated from the Lisbon school system prior to enlisting in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. After boot camp, Leo was sent to Francis E. Warren Air Force Base (Wyoming), where he earned a certificate of proficiency in heating specialist training, then stationed at Thule (Greenland) Air Base. Leo was honorably discharged from the 804th Installations Squadron, ranking as airman second class.
Leo worked many years as a metal fabricator, with McCann Fabrication of New Gloucester as his last place of employment before retiring. He enjoyed playing horseshoes, telling jokes at events and teasing his nieces and nephews calling them “bad cat.” As with his father, he became a volunteer firefighter at the Lisbon Fire Station for more than 25 years.
He leaves behind a son and daughter-in-law, Leo Jr. and Rebecca Albert of Oxford; a daughter and son-in-law, Corena and Stephen Weldon of Auburn; grandchildren Courtney Weldon of Saco and Garrett Weldon of Auburn; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, Rena Albert; one brother, Raynold Albert; and his parents Emile and Cecile Albert.
A Mass honoring his life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at Holy Cross Church, corner of St. Croix and Lisbon streets, Lewiston. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Honor Flight Maine, P.O. Box 1770, Portland, ME 04104-1770, or 207-370-7210, in honor of Maine veterans.
