LEWISTON — Marcel E. Belanger, 83, of Lewiston, died Friday, Aug. 31, at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

Marcel was born in Lewiston on March 26, 1935, the son of Emile and Irene Robitaille Belanger. Marcel attended Holy Cross School and the seminary of Saint-Hyacinthe in Canada. He served as a corpsman in the U.S. Navy based in Pensacola, then Camp Lejeune, and toured in the European theatre during the Korean War. In 1956, he married his first wife, the former Jacqueline Nicolas. In 1958 he joined the Lewiston Police Department as a patrolman and worked his way up the ranks, making detective, then promoted to sergeant of detectives and finally retiring in 1984 as Lieutenant of the Watch. During his early years on the force, Marcel served as president of the Police Athletic League. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge. He married his second wife, the former Lucille Comeau, in 1969.

A member of Holy Cross Church, Prince of Peace Parish, he is survived by his wife of Lewiston, a son, Marc and wife Debora of Sabattus, four daughters, Susan Belanger of Lewiston, Diane Dubois and husband Richard of Lewiston, Therese St. Pierre and husband Denis of San Antonio, Texas, and Denise Chow and husband Kenneth of Dixfield, two stepdaughters, Sandie Worthington and husband Gerry of Lewiston, and Jean Roy of Lewiston, two sisters, Sylvia Langlais and husband Robert of Lewiston, and Monita Cote and husband Roland of Lewiston, nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at the Albert & Burpee Funeral Home on Sunday, 6 to 8 p.m., with a funeral service Monday, 11 a.m., at Holy Cross Church, Lewiston. Donations may be made in Marcel’s memory to the American Diabetes Association, 2451 Crystal Drive, Suite 900, Arlington, VA 22202.
