STARKS — Internationally acclaimed musician/composer/songwriter Phoebe Legere returns to her cherished Maine for a performance of original compositions from her “Home — Where the Heart Is” tour on the center stage of the Harvest Ball at noon Sunday, Oct. 7.
The Harvest Ball runs from Friday, Oct. 5 to Monday, Oct. 8, at Harry Brown’s Farm, 45 Abijah Hill Road.
Legere will be presenting songs from her new “Squeeze Me” album that includes 12 Legere originals and three Cajun-Acadian classics. She is an Abenaki/Acadian songwriter, painter and community activist.
Legere is deeply connected to the area. “Maine is in my heart, my blood and my bones. My ancestors lie in this place. I am descended from Maine whalers, Maine ministers, Abenakis, Micmacs, French pioneers and Acadians.
“In the summer I live in mountainous mid-Maine under a beautiful waterfall. I witness with joy the resurgence of the nearby Androscoggin River. The paper industry is showing new respect for our waters. Maine is listening to the teaching of our elders,” says Legere.
The multi-instrumentalist has played with Joni Mitchell, David Bowie, Billy Joel, Steve Martin and John Hartford and she collaborated with Hunter Thompson on a number of outlaw art performances. She studied music composition at Juilliard and the philosophy of art at Vassar. Legere is also the author and illustrator of a children’s book called “The Magic Accordion.”
She is touring and raising money for her nonprofit Foundation for New American Art (FNAA) that brings art and music to underserved children. She is the founder and executive director of the FNAA. The FNAA activities for the children restore this curriculum in low-income communities whose schools have cut or eliminated arts education programs. All proceeds from her art and music go to http://www.FoundationforNewAmericanArt.org.
There’ll be lots of contests, from costumes to an annual bake-off at this year’s Harvest Ball. The festival features four days and three nights of music and camping while celebrating the season. Sunday tickets are $53.19. There are other rates for the full weekend.
