GORHAM — One person was killed Tuesday morning when an SUV slammed into a tractor-trailer hauling fuel on the Gorham bypass.

Gorham police Chief Daniel Jones said SUV crossed the centerline and hit the truck around 5:30 a.m. The driver of the SUV, who was alone in the vehicle, was killed.

The Bernard Rines Bypass is closed between Narragansett Street and South Street. Police advised commuters to seek alternate routes and said the road will likely be closed most of the day.

Jones said speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors, but the crash remains under investigation.

Jones said the impact of the crash sheared the trailer from the front of the truck.

“There was no spill from that, but now the fuel has to off-loaded before the trailer can be moved,” Jones said. “It’s going to be a long process. I expect that roadway will be closed pretty much all day.

The truck driver was not injured.

The identity of the driver killed in the crash will be released later today after their next of kin has been notified, Jones said.
