WAYNE — The Cary Memorial Library will host summer resident Mark Rochkind, who will share observations and photography from his recent trip to Sri Lanka.

“Sri Lanka is a multicultural island nation, the size of West Virginia, about six degrees north of the Equator, off the southeastern tip of India,” said Rochkind.

The 16-day wildlife and cultural expedition revealed a lot about the country to Rochkind.

“We saw more than 100 species of birds (including more than a dozen endemics) and a passel of mammals. The most elusive and gratifying of the mammals were two cavorting leopards,” Rochkind said.

Rochkind visited archaeological sites dating back to 100 B.C., climbed a granite monolith and saw remnants of fifth-century buildings, frescos and social structure that reminded him of Machu Picchu.

“Though Sri Lanka is tropical, the nation has managed to eradicate malaria,” Rochkind said. “It’s a a very special place; an uncommon destination.”

Rochkind’s previous talks have taken audiences to all corners of the earth with his trademark polished and beautifully photographed presentations.

All may attend the  presentation at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15, at 17 Old Winthrop Road, just off Route 133. The library is air-conditioned and handicapped-accessible.
