LEWISTON — A Greene man shot himself in the leg Monday morning at a local doctor’s office.
The 59-year-old man had an appointment at Maine Optometry at 585 Main St., police said. He was in the bathroom where he was securing his handgun when it discharged, striking him in the leg, police said.
No one else was injured.
The man, who had a concealed firearms permit, was taken by ambulance to Central Maine Medical Center for treatment of injuries not considered life-threatening.
The shooting was determined to be accidental, but a report was sent to the Androscoggin County District Attorney’s Office for review, according to Lt. David St. Pierre.
The case remains under investigation.
CEO Amy Landry said Tuesday the business had no specific prohibition against patients bringing weapons with them to their appointments.
She noted the injured man had a concealed carry permit. “So he followed all of the requirements.”
The incident prompted the business to review its policies and procedures “to make sure all of our patients and staff are safe and protected,” she said.
“The staff did a fabulous job yesterday dealing with a pretty unexpected situation,” Landry said. “We’re really pleased with their ability to respond appropriately.”
