Grange hall members held the yard sale to help pay for repairs done over a sixth-month period that started in December, Grange member Maynard Chapman said. The Grange, built in 1898, is the last operating Grange hall in Auburn and Lewiston, Chapman said. “We have good members,” Chapman answered when asked why the Danville Grange has remained active while the other four in Auburn and two in Lewiston have closed. Chapman said that most Grange halls have closed their doors because younger people are not joining. “This was a fun and safe place to grow up,” member Gladys Chapman said. But like the other older members, Gladys Chapman said it’s a struggle to get the younger generation interested in the fraternal organization that was started by farmers over 150 years ago to focus on agricultural education.
