FARMINGTON — Old Tyme Fun is the theme of Summer Fest on Saturday, July 28, when games, food and business specials will be offered in the downtown.
Church Street and Broadway will be closed for vendors and entertainment. Some events will take place in Meetinghouse Park.
“Everything’s free. We do this for the community,” organizer Susun Terese said.
A new event organized by Joe Musumeci, owner of Farmington Underground, will be a History Mystery Scavenger Hunt. Participants will step back in time to uncover Farmington in the 1930s.
Terese said all entries must be turned in before the 5 p.m. drawing. Cash prizes will be awarded.
The theme for the children’s parade is “The Enchanted Forest.” Children are encouraged to dress as trolls, fairies, dragons, unicorns or anything to do with fantasy.
Sue Jones will organize children’s activities in Meetinghouse Park after the parade.
Marketplace vendors will be set up on Broadway and Church Streets. The Farmington Farmers Market will be found on Church Street.
Local historian Paul Mills will give historic wagon tours around the downtown. The Petting Zoo will be at The Pierce House. The Spandits Race, Picnic on the Lawn, Pie on the Porch, Balloon Dude, Magic Guy and stilt walkers will all return.
Brenda Fronk of Aubuchon Hardware is organizing the Great Float Race on the Sandy River. The race starts just below the Fairbanks bridge and ends by the trestle crossing at the UMF athletic fields. Prizes will be awarded in three categories.
“It seems like fun,” Terese said. “It hasn’t taken off yet. Maybe more will participate this year.”
For more information or to register, Fronk said to stop by Aubuchon’s or email 108@aubuchonhardware.com.
The Dreamin’ Big Bed Race will have a fun addition this year: the Sleeping on the Job Business Challenge. Any business, not only those in Farmington, can compete for the trophy. The winning team will keep the trophy until next year.
Summer Fest will conclude with a performance by Ice Out Band.
