PARIS — Corrections officials are investigating the death of an Oxford County Jail inmate who died four days after suffering self-inflicted injuries at the lockup.

According to his obituary, 47-year-old Scott A. Britton of South Paris died July 10 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

The cause of death was not immediately available Friday.

Oxford County Jail officials said Britton’s injuries were self-inflicted, but they didn’t elaborate on the type of injuries.

The death is being investigated by the Maine Department of Corrections and the Maine Medical Examiner’s Office.

Britton was booked at the jail July 3 on a charge of possessing scheduled drugs. Oxford police said they arrested Britton in the Walmart parking lot after he was found in his car shooting up heroin. Police said a search of the vehicle produced four grams of heroin, needles and the painkiller gabapentin.

After he was found injured at the jail, officials said, Britton was taken to Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway before he was taken to Maine Medical Center.
