FALMOUTH — For the second day in a row Shannon Johnson went where no other woman in the field went Tuesday in the second round of the New England Women’s Amateur golf championship.

After being the only player to break par in the first round, Johnson was one of just two players in the second round to go under par, stretching her lead over Hannah Ghelfi to four shots at The Woodlands Club.

Johnson carded a 4-under 68 on Tuesday to get to 4-under 140 two rounds into the 54-hole tournament. Fellow Massachusetts resident Ghelfi shot 1-under to get to even par for the tournament. Both players have a sizable lead over third-place Sophie DiPetrillo (also from Massachusetts), who shot 1-over on Tuesday and is 7-over for the tournament.

Erin Holmes (formerly of Cumberland, now of Gray) continues to be the top Maine performer, but she is 21 shots back of Johnson after shooting a 14-over 86 in the second round, putting her 21-over for the tournament and tied for 15th place. Bailey Plourde, the defending runner-up of the Maine Women’s Amateur championship, is two shots back of Holmes after a second-round 80 and is tied for 17th place.

Mia Hornberger, of Turner, followed her first-round 84 with an 18-over 90 in the second round. Hornberger is 30-over for the tournament and in a tie for 30th place.

The top 70 players made the cut of 191 and will play in Wednesday’s final round, including 20 players from Maine.
