LEWISTON — A local man denied charges Monday of selling crack cocaine last winter.
Sharod Nunes, 39, of 125 College St. entered not guilty pleas in 8th District Court to two counts of aggravated trafficking in scheduled drugs, both Class A felonies, each punishable by up to 30 years in prison.
According to an indictment handed up in May by an Androscoggin County grand jury, Nunes sold crack Jan. 30 and Feb. 1 to a confidential informant for $50 and $100, respectively. Because Nunes has a 2007 conviction from Worcester, Massachusetts, for distribution of controlled substance, his current charges were upgraded.
He was appointed a lawyer by the judge.
Prosecutors were seeking to have bail set at $10,000 cash, but Judge Rick Lawrence set bail at $5,000.
Police picked up Nunes on a warrant over the weekend after he had used false identification.
Nunes has prior convictions for drug possession, domestic violence assault and reckless conduct with a firearm.
Defense attorney Kelly Mcmorran said Nunes has lived locally for eight years, has a girlfriend and 5-year-old son in Lewiston and is working to rehabilitate an apartment for a local landlord.
Lawrence placed conditions on Nunes’ bail, including no possession of alcohol and illegal drugs, for which he can be searched and tested at random.
