DURHAM — Russell Dexter Higgins, 94, of Quaker Meeting House Road died Monday, July 2, at his home.

He was born in Bowdoin on March 19, 1924, the son of Herbert and Lizzie Douglass Higgins. He attended Bowdoin schools. On Aug. 3, 1963, he married Patricia E. Burrill.

Mr. Higgins worked multiple jobs before being drafted into the Army. He served three years in combat during WWII. After being honorably discharged, Russell owned his own mechanic garage and worked in the woods.

He moved to California in 1956 to work construction for the operating engineers, returning to Maine in 1981.

Russell enjoyed working on tractors, going hunting with his son Andrew, going to auctions with his son Keith, bartering, trading and spending time with his family.

He was a member of Masonic Lodge 23, Aames Temple Shrine of California and the Maine Antique Tractor Club.

Surviving besides his wife, Patricia, are two sons, Andrew Higgins and his wife, Priscilla, Keith Higgins Sr. and his fiance, Christina Parker, all of Durham; a sister, Dorcas Fitts, of Yarmouth; two grandsons, Keith Higgins Jr. and his companion, Katelyn Schertzer, and Adam Higgins and his companion, Courtney Kearns, all of Durham; two great-great-grandchildren, Vera Higgins and Gabby Schertzer, both of Durham.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Sylvia Higgins; and two brothers, Herbert Higgins and Walter Legendre.
