ANSON — An Anson man was taken to a hospital Wednesday morning with serious injuries after he spent nearly 11 hours stranded in the woods after a motorcycle crash.

A couple was taking a walk before 7 a.m. Wednesday when they heard someone yelling for help, Chief Deputy James Ross, of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office, said in a statement. The pair was able to find David Gorey, 52, lying in the woods near the intersection of Pease Hill and Dinsmore roads and called the police.

Gorey told the responding deputies that he had no sense of feeling from his chest down, Ross said, adding that his injuries did not appear to be life-threatening. Gorey was taken to Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan by AMS ambulance, where he then was taken by LifeFlight of Maine helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

Gorey told police that about 8:30 or 9 p.m. Tuesday he had been traveling east on his 2001 Harley-Davidson motorcycle. At a curve in the road, Gorey apparently continued straight, causing him to go off the left side of Pease Hill Road and crossing over Dinsmore Road until he crashed in the woods. He remained lying in the woods all night until the couple head him yelling for help.

Police still are investigating the crash, but they consider excessive speed to be a possible contributing factor. Ross said the police were not looking into whether Gorey might have been under the influence of alcohol at the time, since the alcohol would have left his system by the time he was found Wednesday and a test would not be able to determine if it was a factor.

Additionally, Ross said he did not know how much experience Gorey had riding motorcycles or what Gorey’s specific injuries were.
