This week the Buzz is feeling well rested, well fed and well . . . dentaled?

Mattress by Appointment opened at 791 Kittyhawk Ave. in Auburn in May, in the same plaza as Dunkin’ Donuts right off exit 75.

It is franchisee Mike Phillips’ third location in Maine and Mattress by Appointment’s fourth site for the state. Others are in Brewer, Oakland and Biddeford.

“We just thought it would be a good area,” said Phillips about opening the Auburn store.

The concept is exactly as the name implies: Would-be customers reach out for half-hour or one-hour appointments, meet Phillips or an employee in the 2,400-square-foot storefront and go to mattress town.

“They come, pick out a mattress and take it or we deliver it for them,” Phillips said. “We can keep costs down; we don’t have to pay for a bunch of employees, we don’t have the lights and everything on 10 hours a day. Some people are uncomfortable laying on mattresses with a bunch of people sitting around, so they can take their time and try everything we have and find the one they want.”

Business so far has been good, he said.

Heck yeah

There’s a dental cover model in our midst.

Peter Drews, the owner of Drews Dental Services, P.C. on Sabattus Street in Lewiston, is on the cover of this month’s Dentaltown Magazine with a 10-page spread inside. He’s holding a banana split on the cover, a nod to his dental office being in the former Friendly’s restaurant.

According to Dentaltown.com, the magazine has subscribers all over the U.S. and Canada, and 225,000 online accounts on its industry forums.

The glossy magazine features one dentist a month. Drews, former president of the Maine Dental Association, said in a news release that he hopes the coverage encourages new dentists to give smaller-scale practices in underserved areas a try.

“The article focuses on my strong desire to reinvest in the community and provide the latest technology available, all while keeping the patient and their well-being the main focus,” he said.

See what they did there?

The U.S. Postal Service made the unusual move of sending a news release out Wednesday afternoon letting folks know that they’ll be closed July 4 “to celebrate the anniversary of our nation’s independence.” Which, of course they will be.

However, revealing an ulterior motive and love for a good turn of phrase, the release continues:

“Tired of living in Mom and Dad’s basement and looking for some independence of your own? Check out www.usps.com/careers and see the tremendous opportunities a postal career can offer.”

Nice.

Last month, Oakhurst delivered four bottles of its new Wild Blueberry Milk to the newsroom for a sneak sip of that new limited-time flavor.

This month, six lobster rolls rolled up on our doorstep — toasted on the outside, chilled on the inside, nice lettuce-to-lobster ratio — and how could we not let them in?

They were delivered in honor of Govenor’s Restaurant and Bakery’s 59th anniversary. If Govenor’s turning 59 isn’t enough of a fun fast fact, here’s one more, according to the company’s website:

It started as Creemee’s ice cream stand in 1959 in Old Town. There are six locations, including in Lewiston.

When Leith and Donna Wadleigh turned their venture into a full-service restaurant, they named it after the way Leith greeted customers, “Hi ya, Governor.”
