Alfred J. Sweet of Lewiston will represent Maine in the national Republican committee succeeding Senator Frederick Hale, who was elected to that position in 1912 and resigned several weeks ago. Mr. Sweet’s choice as national committeeman came as a surprise, as his name had never been mentioned in this connection, except in a few quarters.
 
50 years ago, 1968
Shoe manufacturing establishments of the Twin Cities will close at the end of the work day Friday for the annual summer vacation. Marchand Moccasin Co. and Bonan Footwear Co. will reopen July 8. Factories which will close for two weeks reopening July 15 include Androscoggin Shoe Corp., Arno Moccasin Co., Belgrade Shoe, Bel Moc Inc., Clark Shoe, Commonwealth Shoe and Leather, Crest Shoe, Falcon Shoe, Hana Shoe, Knapp Brothers, Koss Shoe, Sarita Inc., and Shapiro Brothers Shoe Co. Lown Shoe Inc. will close Thursday but office personnel will work Friday. Lown, too, will reopen July 15.

Ending the more-than-four-month selection process, L-A Public Theater recently announced Christopher Schario as its new artistic director. Chosen from over 130 very qualified applicants, Schario, of New York, will replace George Vafiadis who vacated the position June 1, according to Thomas Platz, treasurer of L-A Public Theater’s board of directors. Schario will work with the board during the next week to finalize the plans for the season.  Born and raised in Canton, Ohio, Schario has been a professional director and actor for the past 23 years. Among his accomplishments, Schario served as associate artistic director of Rochester Civic Theatre in Rochester. Minn.
