DEAR SUN SPOTS: Please don’t throw out your planters that are in good shape. Donate them to the Hope Association’s What-Not-Shop in Rumford so we can reuse them in the Briar Patch Greenhouse. For more information, contact Jennifer at 207-364-4561. — Jennifer, no town
DEAR SUN SPOTS: Regarding the May 28 Sun Spots, the young men singing at KFC recently were the Yale Society of Orpheus and Bacchus (SOBS, for short). My son Kyle is a rising junior at Yale and has been singing with them for two years. They were here for a “hometown concert” where they perform for a member’s family and friends. We showed your letter to the group and they are thrilled that the people who wrote in enjoyed their singing. If you want to hear more, you can purchase CDs at yalesobs.com/store.html, as well as listen to them on Spotify. — Beth, Lewiston
ANSWER: Thank you so much for sharing this information, Beth. I love the thought that the reader who wrote in will see this and order the CDs for her mom to enjoy anytime, anywhere!
DEAR SUN SPOTS: I wish to thank you, for the words of the lovely song “Whispering Hope” in the May 29 Sun Spots. Years ago I used to sing it when I played the autoharp and visited the folks in nursing homes. Now the autoharp is no longer in tune and neither is my voice. I couldn’t remember all the verses for I am now 84 years old. I first heard this lovely song being sung by a young couple at the chapel at McNair Barracks in Berlin in 1953 when I belonged to the Youth Fellowship and sang in the choir. — Heidi, Dryden
ANSWER: I’m so glad we brought some joy into your life, Heidi, and helped you recollect special memories. Keep singing!
DEAR SUN SPOTS: I love fresh mushrooms and have always wondered if the dirt in the package is safe to eat. I brush or wipe it off, just to be on the safe side. — No name, no town
ANSWER: Continue cleaning your mushrooms. I use a soft toothbrush for this purpose and gently rinse and dry them right before using. There is a whole lot of information about why at shelflifeadvice.com/content/faqs-about-mushrooms-are-they-very-dirty-or-very-clean.
