JACKSONVILLE, N.C. — Timothy James Fahey Sr. was an incredible man. He was called home to his heavenly father on March 12, at age 70, in his home located in Jacksonville, N.C.
Tim was born in Lewiston on July 5, 1947, the son of Dr. William E. Fahey and Beatrice C. Fahey. He attended Wallace Elementary, St. Joseph’s School, Jordan Junior High and was a member of Lewiston High School Class of 1966. After high school Tim attended Maine Central Institute for post-graduate studies in 1967. In the fall of 1967 he enrolled at Bliss College, where he studied until January 1969. In February 1969, Tim departed Lewiston for basic training in the United States Air Force. After an outstanding career he retired from the Air Force, having served over 20 years on active duty.
During his service in the military he was able to take his love of sports in the direction of coaching. Coach Fahey was able to lead many teams over the years to squadron championships in basketball and softball. He eventually coached at a base level and won championships in the Mediterranean and European theaters, as well as an Air Force championship. Coach Fahey was recognized as one of the most respectable basketball coaches; he was selected to the coaching staff of the Strategic Air Command Europe team, Air Force Mediterranean team and the All Air Force team. He coached many outstanding players — one being the only military player invited to the 1984 Olympic Team tryouts.
During his military career he was awarded many medals; specifically, the Air Force Commendation medal and the Air Force Achievement medal. He was qualified as a weapons expert, attended Non-Commissioned Officer Leadership Academy, the Non-Commissioned Officer Academy and was qualified as an Air Force training instructor. A highlight of his career occurred while stationed at Rhein Mein Air Base in Germany, where he was assigned to a security detail to protect President George H. W. Bush on two occasions.
Tim was a member of The Knight of Columbus, 3rd degree, American Legion, Air Force Association and a lifetime member of the Non-Commission Officer Association. Mr. Fahey spent his time being fair to all those whom he was able to lead, coach and share times with during his days on Earth. He enjoyed his family, especially his children Kimberly A. Smith and Timothy J. Fahey Jr., and his many grandchildren.
Tim was preceded in death by his loving daughter, Katherine Elizabeth Fahey.
