Advance care class offered

RUMFORD — Rumford Hospital will host an informational session called “Endings Matter: The Importance of Advance Care Planning” from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 14, in the hospital’s Conference Room A (ground floor), 420 Franklin St.

Katherine M. Amsden, LCSW, ACHP-SW, CP, from Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice, will discuss advance directives and explain their importance in directing end-of-life care. She will review the various decisions and options available, covering such topics as long-term care and pain control. She will explain why an individual should document their wishes and how family members are assisted if someone who has prepared advance directives is unable to communicate due to an accident or illness.

Nordica season opening

FARMINGTON — The Nordica Homestead Museum will be opening for the season this Saturday, June 1. It contains various displayed artifacts, including costumes and jewelry, from the life and career of the famous opera diva Lillian Nordica, born in Farmington in 1857. The Nordica Memorial Association is also proud to announce that the winner of this year’s Nordica Scholarship is soprano Kiersten Curtis, recent graduate of USM. She will be performing in Nordica Auditorium as part the annual Nordica Day celebration on Friday, Aug. 17.

Library paricipates in Read ME

HARRISON — The Harrison Village Library will participate in Read ME, a statewide program presented by the Maine Humanities Council in partnership with the Maine State Library that gets Maine’s adults all reading the same books: one fiction title and one non-fiction title by Maine authors that are recommended by a Maine author.

A discussion of this year’s fiction selection, “River Talk” by CB Anderson, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 2. The discussion of the non-fiction title, “Settled in the Wild: Notes from the Edge of Town” by Susan Hand Shetterly, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 4. Copies of the books are available for loan at the library.

The Friends of the Library will hold the annual book, bake and plant sale at the library from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 2.
