LEWISTON — The city is restarting its rehabilitation project at the Chestnut Street parking garage next week, which will impact roughly 100 garage customers.
According to a notice from Saco Falls Management, which manages The Lofts at Bates Mill, the work will complete the application of a new traffic membrane on levels 3 and 4 that was started in November.
It is expected to take about two weeks.
The notice said that in the meantime, about 100 customers will be transferred to the Lincoln Street parking garage until the work ends. On Friday, all current Chestnut parking garage customers’ access cards will be reprogrammed, allowing access to both garages.
On Monday, June 4, the Chestnut parking garage will accept parking customers on a first-come, first-serve basis until the bottom level and second level are full, the notice states.
According to City Administrator Ed Barrett, the project began last year and was not completed due to the weather turning cold.
The traffic membrane is designed to limit water and salt intrusion into the concrete parking deck to prevent its deterioration, he said. Much of the wear and tear is caused by salt and calcium chloride used for winter de-icing.
Funding for the project was included in last year’s capital improvement plan. In recent years, the city has been catching up on regular maintenance of its garages, including painting iron beams.
Barrett said the city will be working on the Canal Street garage in the coming year to undertake concrete repair and to replace the level 5 and 6 expansion joints. That work will cost the city $230,000.
