AUBURN — Glenn Hayes passed away Sunday, May 27, at the Hospice House in Auburn after a long illness.
He was born Oct. 23, 1934, in Greenwood, to Roland and Doris Hayes. He graduated college from Gorham Teachers College (now USM). He taught industrial arts for several years at Greenville High School, before moving to Gray, Maine, in 1960, where he taught industrial arts and mathematics at Gray-New Gloucester High School. He retired in the late 1980’s from the school and then became custodian and handyman at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church for years after.
Glenn was an avid hunter and fisherman, and during summer breaks from school would build houses with James Tobin, another industrial arts teacher at GNG. As he got older, Glenn no longer built houses but continued to work with wood, building furniture in his woodworking shop.
Glenn was a soft-spoken man of few words but was a storyteller and had stories for any occasion. He thought the world of his only grandchild, Benton, and was amazed of his artistic ability and proudly showed off the most recent artwork completed by Benton to his friends at Schooner Estates.
Glenn married the love of his life, Rachel Boucher, on June 4, 1960, at Holy Family Church in Greenville, and lived in Gray from 1962 to 2016, when his health was failing and they moved to an apartment at Schooner Estates in Auburn.
Glenn is survived by his wife, Rachel, of Auburn; a son, Kerry, and his wife, Julie, of Gray; a grandson, Benton, of Gray; and a brother, Dell, and his wife, Betty, of Auburn. He was predeceased by his parents; a son, Kevin; a brother Erwin and his wife, Doris; and another brother Duane and his wife, Avis.
