AUGUSTA — Richard “Dick” Gile, 87, a longtime resident of Wales, died Sunday, May 20, at the V.A. Hospital in Togus.

His family remembers him as a generous, selfless, hardworking, loving father, grandfather and friend. He was born on Feb. 2, 1931, in Wales, the son of LaForest Gile and Laura (Andrews) Gile. Dick was educated in Wales and graduated from Lewiston High School Class of 1949. Dick proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy on the USS Everett F. Larson DDR 830 during the Korean War. On April 28, 1952, in Kingfield, he married Mary M Sawyer; she passed away on Dec. 5, 2016.

He worked as a sales manager for Superior Concrete in Auburn and Swan’s Concrete in Westbrook, retiring in 1993. Dick enjoyed woodworking, reading, western movies and word search puzzles. He was a member of the Wales Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon; he was a selectman for the town of Wales for many years and the King of “Tops.” Dick was a member of the American Legion Post 204 of Monmouth and the Lions Club of Monmouth.

He is survived by two sons and their spouses, Dwight and Deborah Gile of Wales and Charles “Chuck” and Connie Gile of Sabattus; seven grandchildren, Bethany Gile, Brittany Driscoll, Alexis Gile, Zach Thibault, Chelsie Thibault, Lesley Martin and Garrett Gile; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Joyce Logan and her husband, Mike, of Augusta; and special nieces and nephew, Kathleen, Erin and Bill; two brothers-in-law, Phillip Sawyer of Norway, Ken Sawyer of Poland; and his special pal “Gunner.”

He was predeceased by his parents, and his wife, Mary M. Gile.
