These are among the questions Maine political candidates should be asked:

Recreational marijuana — would you vote for it? If you were recently in the Legislature, how did you vote on the governor’s veto of the marijuana bill? Do you favor medical marijuana?

Do you favor a one-payer (government-run) system of health insurance? Are you willing to pass much higher taxes to fund it?

Do you favor expansion of Medicaid without a stable funding system to pay for it? What is the cost?

Do you favor requiring a photo ID in order to receive a ballot for voting? Do you favor proof of citizenship in order to register to vote?

Do you favor allowing female genital mutilation?

How would you deal with illegal immigrants? Do you favor open borders? Do you favor sanctuary cities in Maine or in the United States? Should illegal immigrants be deported?

Do you favor our “open carry” gun laws?

Do you favor any age changes for eligibility to vote, to buy a gun, to drive, to buy alcoholic beverages, to buy marijuana, to be employed full time?

Do you favor increased sales taxes to reduce income taxes? Do you favor increased meals and lodging taxes (aimed at out-of-staters)?

Do you favor a right-to-work law to allow working without being forced to join a union?
